Koi fish are a symbol of love and friendship. The Japanese associate koi with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose.
The word ‘koi’ comes from Japanese, simply meaning “carp.” They consider the Koi to be the most energetic of all fish. This is because it is always in motion , often churning up water. The Koi is also able to fight the current of the water and swim upstream.
From this we can derive two meanings:

2. Koi fish also symbolize persistence and the willingness to go on, even when being swept away. It also symbolizes surpassing expectations. The Koi fish swimming upstream can show that a person has overcome various obstacles and difficulties and not only does he or she keep standing, but he or she has emerged victorious.
According to Japanese legend, if a koi succeeded in climbing the falls at a point called Dragon Gate on the Yellow River, it would be transformed into a dragon. Based on that legend, it became a symbol of worldly aspiration and advancement.
